Increase in the minimum wage on January 1, 2024: here is how much its amount should be: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Every year on January 1st, the interprofessional minimum wage for growth (SMIC) is increasing. This, contrary to what the government sometimes suggests, is mechanical and calculated based on two indicators: the inflation rate and the annual gain in purchasing power of the average hourly wage of workers and employees (SHBOE) . Thanks to these two measures, the site DemarchesAdministratives.fr carried out a calculation in order to estimate the amount of the minimum wage from January 1, 2024. It should experience an increase of 1.9% and thus reach 1,780 euros gross per month, or 1,410 euros net. Caution remains in order regarding these figures, which should be officially announced by the government by the end of December.

On what basis is the SMIC revalued?

In France, more than 2 million employees receive the minimum wageor 12% of the population, according to Dares figures (organization attached to the Ministry of Labor) of 2021. Since 2017 and the election of Emmanuel Macron, the net minimum wage has increased from 1,151 euros to 1,383 euros today, an increase of 15.5% decrypts Capital. However, we cannot blame this increase in the minimum wage on the government, our colleagues explain. Indeed, the minimum wage is automatically revalued, in accordance with the rules set out in the Labor Code. These aim to protect the purchasing power of lower-paid employees. This is why the year 2023 saw two increases in the minimum wage, in January and May 2023, in order to follow the evolution of inflation. The government, however, has the power to decide on an additional increase in the minimum wage, but this hasn’t happened since July 2012at the start of François Hollande’s five-year term.
