Production of electric cars is booming in Germany

Around 328,000 electric cars will be produced in Germany in 2021. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this is an increase of 85.8 percent compared to the previous year. Germany is also growing strongly in exports.

The production of electric cars is increasing massively in Germany – also due to the government purchase premium and tax breaks. In 2021, around 328,000 purely electric cars worth 13.7 billion euros were produced. That was an 85.8 percent increase in volume compared to last year, like that Federal Statistical Office reported. Compared to 2019, the increase was 268 percent.

Despite the growth in purely electric cars, the German automotive industry was still mainly producing cars with classic combustion engines in 2021. However, the trend is sharply downward: With around 2.2 million units worth 73.2 billion euros, it was 23.3 percent less than in the previous year. This also changes the relationship between electric cars and combustion engines: while in 2021 almost seven times as many pure combustion engines rolled off the production line as cars with a pure electric drive, in 2020 there were around 16 times more.

To Information from the Federal Motor Transport Authority around 356,000 purely electric cars were newly registered in 2021 – an increase of 83.3 percent compared to the previous year. The number of electric cars has doubled in the same period: from around 309,000 electric cars on January 1, 2021 to 618,000 electric cars on January 1, 2022.

In 2021, around 300,000 purely electric cars worth 12.6 billion euros were exported. That was almost twice as many (92.4 percent) as in the previous year and more than three times as many (210.7 percent) as in 2019. There was also an increase in imports: 292,000 electric cars were imported for 7.5 billion euros the amount compared to the previous year by 75.8 percent – compared to 2019 almost four times (382.3 percent).
