(Boursier.com) — Indian sales of 5G smartphones will exceed those of 4G devices by the end of 2023, due to the mass adoption of the broadband network and the increase in sales of handsets at more affordable prices, according to market research firm Counterpoint. Although overall smartphone sales in India are estimated to decline this year due to component supply issues and less buoyant macroeconomic conditions, 5G will also continue to drive smartphone demand in 2023, adds Counterpoint.

India’s 5G data speed is expected to be about 10 times faster than 4G, with the future of the network seen as crucial for the future of emerging technologies such as self-driving cars or artificial intelligence. The share of 5G handsets in the lower price bracket (less than 20,000 rupees or $241.55) is thus expected to rise to 30 percent in 2023 from just 4 percent last year, Counterpoint estimated.

Acceleration in progress

The research company expects that the brakes on the development of this market such as shortages of supply of components, inflation, geopolitical conflicts or even the limited availability of 5G networks will ease by the end of fiscal year 2023, “leading to the mass adoption of 5G” in the country.

At the same time, the Indian government is pushing Apple, Samsung and other mobile phone makers to prioritize rolling out software upgrades to support 5G nationwide, as many smartphone models are not yet ready for the recently launched high-speed service in India…
