India could host a Tesla Gigafactory

Tesla continues its global expansion and seeks to establish itself in new regions. After establishing its presence in the United States, China and Germany, the American automaker is now turning its sights to India, where a new Gigafactory could see the light of day.

Of the five existing Gigafactories, three are in the United States, respectively in Reno, Nevada, Buffalo, New York, and Austin, Texas. However, it was in Shanghai, China, that the first Gigafactory located outside the American borders saw the light of day in 2019. The realization of the Berlin Gigafactory project, located in Grünheide, took almost three years between its announcement and start of production.

More recently, Tesla unveiled plans for a sixth Gigafactory, this time in Mexico. This project, requiring an investment of 5 billion dollars, will be implemented near the city of Monterrey in the years to come. While this sixth project is still in its infancy, Elon Musk is already considering the establishment of a seventh factory. India is thus designated as Tesla’s next preferred destination for this expansion. Citing a source familiar with the matter, Reuters writes that “Tesla has offered to set up a factory in India to manufacture electric cars for sale in the domestic market as well as for export.”
