Indian stocks fall more than 2% as Russia-Ukraine crisis escalates


The NSE Nifty 50 index fell 1.56% to 16,938.20 0349 GMT, while the S&P BSE Sensex was down 1.62% to 56,750.87, after falling 2% each on the open.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine after recognizing them as independent on Monday, drawing condemnation from the United States and Europe for accelerating a crisis that the West fears could ignite a major war.

Mumbai, the Nifty Public Sector Banks Index and the Nifty Information Technology Index were the biggest losers among the other sub-indices, falling 2.5% and 1.8% respectively.
