After a pandemic that will have harmed cinemas, 2022 has been a year of rebirth, with great popular successes like Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Waterway and The Batman. Enough to make us optimistic for this new vintage which promises to be just as rich and promising.

Between dizzying blockbusters, adaptation of cult licenses and new works by cinema greats like Martin Scorsese, here are the ten most anticipated films of 2023.

Knock at the Cabin – February 1st

While spending their vacation in an isolated cabin, a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand an impossible choice from them in order to avoid the imminence of the apocalypse.

After years of wandering, M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Split) has once again become a much-awaited director. Knock at the Cabin promises a recipe as old as the world, but devilishly effective: a question of morality mixed with the supernatural, all in a thriller full of mysteries. We say yes.

Super Mario Bros., the movie – April 5

A plumber named Mario finds himself propelled into a wonderful world, where he will have to become a hero to find his lost brother and protect a kingdom from the terrifying Bowser.

We were still too traumatized by the first adaptation dating back to 1993 to hope for anything from this new cinema version of the most famous video game. It was before seeing the trailer, which by its epic breath and its inspired staging announces an ambitious adaptation. Signed by Illumination Studios (Minions), the film promises a regressive journey to perfection that risks giving us a lot of fun.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – May 31st

After finding Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man, the friendly hero from Brooklyn, is catapulted through the Multiverse where he will meet a team of Spider-Heroes responsible for protecting its existence. But when the heroes clash over how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against them and must redefine what it means to be a hero.

This sequel to the excellent Spider-Man: Next Generation released in 2018 (Oscar for best animated film) brings us back to an older and mature Miles Morales, struggling with the complex responsibilities that his status as a superhero entails. The Multiverse promises a multitude of alternate versions of Spider-Man, for as many aesthetic and visual variations. An adventure that promises to be even more breathtaking and sublime than the first film.

Elementary – 21st of June

In the city of Element City, fire, water, earth and air live in the most perfect harmony. This is where Flam resides, an intrepid and quick-witted young woman with a strong character, and Flack, a sentimental and amusing boy, rather a follower at heart. Their friendship challenges Flam’s beliefs about the world they live in…

Even if the studio’s latest productions weren’t the most convincing (especially Buzz Lightning), a new Pixar film is always an event. Especially in the case ofElementary, which seems to return to the recipe that made the success of the Luxo lamp studios: a dive into an imaginary world (toys, monsters, emotions) to better speak of ours. And besides, it’s beautiful.

Harrison Ford is putting on his Fedora for a fifth (and final) time for a new adventure by the famous Indiana Jones. With Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and the producers of the original saga, John Williams on music and director James Mangold (Le Mans 66, Logan) behind the camera, this new opus promises to be the perfect marriage of nostalgia and novelty. A last stand that promises to be magnificent.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 – July 12

The sequel to the adventures of spy Ethan Hunt who has accepted a new mission… impossible.

Five years after the last opus, Tom Cruise is about to run, jump, and do a new batch of improbable stunts in the shoes of Ethan Hunt. A “Mission: Impossible 7” that we certainly expect for its political intrigue and its flamboyant cast, but above all for its action sequences which once again promise to be breathtaking. We already have our tickets for part two, already scheduled for summer 2024.

Barbie – July 19

A Barbie deemed not “perfect” enough for Barbie Land goes on an adventure in the real world.

On paper, a movie Barbie is not at the top of the list of our expectations. But when this one promises a second degree and an absurd humor at will, and that it is signed Greta Gerwig (lady bird, The Daughters of Doctor March), it inevitably tickles our curiosity. The nawak trailer in reference to 2001, a space odyssey (yes, yes), and a Ryan Gosling in peroxide Ken finished convincing us. It looks grand.

Oppenheimer – July 19

The life of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, involved in the Manhattan Project, the program to develop atomic weapons in the 1940s.

Christopher Nolan’s new movieInterstellar, The Dark Knight) promises to offer both an intimate portrait of the “father of the atomic bomb” and an introspective account of our relationship to war and our own humanity. For his film, Nolan surrounded himself with a cast of luxury including Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy in the main role.

A boy becomes the messiah of nomads on a desert planet where giant worms live that protect a commodity called Spice. The spice turns people into travelers, mystics and madmen. What price will he pay to become the new master of their universe?

Dunes was one of the great blockbusters of the year 2021. After having established his universe, Denis Villeneuve will finally be able to let go of the horses and open the horizons of Arrakis. The already prestigious cast (Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Javier Bardem) benefits from fine additions: Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler and even Christopher Walken.

Killers of the Flower Moon – during 2023

Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the film chronicles the serial murder of members of the wealthy Osage Nation oil company, brutal crimes that will come to be known as the Reign of Terror.

The only film from a streaming platform (Apple TV+) of our top, Martin Scorsese’s next feature film should be part of our selection. Based on the eponymous bestseller by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon will see Leonardo DiCaprio opposite Robert De Niro in a period thriller reminiscent of the excellent Shutter Island. Something to be impatient about.
