Only a few more days until he puts his fedora back on and cracks his whip again. To prepare fans for the release ofIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (June 28 at the cinema), the film crew gave a press conference last Tuesday, and Digital was able to attend.

Between some details on the production and the spirit of the film, Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and director James Mangold notably revealed their favorite characters from the adventure franchise.

“Completing Indy’s Story”

“I always wanted to complete the story of Indy, and see him at the end of his career, and his life”, says Harrison Ford. One more statement to prepare viewers for this fifth adventure, the last time the 80-year-old actor will play the famous archaeologist.

It must be said that this Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny necessarily has an intimate and twilight dimension that the previous opuses did not have. Something director James Mangold is familiar with, having already tackled the issue in Loganin 2017.

Indiana Jones 5: release date, story, cast, images… all about the film

“The center of my job is to make sure the film has heart”says Mangold. “There’s no reason a large-scale movie doesn’t have humanity. […] These are films where there are people and problems, and a certain emotional depth of the human condition”.

We will of course let the spectators judge the success or failure of this approach, but this new film inevitably pushes us to look back, and to see the previous films with another eye.

In this little game, the conference moderator also asked the team members to name their favorite characters from the four previous adventures.

An apparently difficult exercise for Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, RogueOne), interpreter of the Nazi Jürgen Voller in The Dial of Destiny : “I have to choose a Nazi, then?”.

“Do you remember that scene where Indy is supposed to have this big fight, which ultimately doesn’t happen”he continues more seriously, referring to The Raiders of the Lost Ark (nineteen eighty one).

“I would have loved to be on set, and be that guy that he goes up against, to see what happened when you shoot him. There are so many myths about that scene. But it would have been fun to be him, at the time of this big fight”.

To the same question, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (flea bag), interpreter of Helena in the film, chooses a cult character from the franchise: “Number one choice is obviously Indy, but I think I’d say Marion Ravenwood. What an amazing character, and so much fun. Badass, and very authentic too. That’s what I love about her.”.

A choice taken up by director James Mangold: “I think I would choose Marion, like Phoebe”he says. “She’s a phenomenal performance, phenomenal character, and their chemistry (between her and Indy) was awesome. […] Karen’s game [Allen, l’interprète de Marion Ravenwood]the writing, and the way Steven Spielberg handled it, it broke down a lot of barriers at the time.”.

Finally, it is Mads Mikkelsen who reminds everyone of the obvious: “We all wanted to be Indy. And we still do”.
