TO REMEMBER

With 1,089,875 entries, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny whips up the competition for its first week in theaters. And this in a context marked by La Fête du Cinéma – attendance up 7% over 2022 for Sunday July 2 – and certain cinema closings linked to the riots.

Indy dislodges like this Elementary at the head of the box office in France, the Pixar film has accumulated 964,739 torn tickets to date. Performance which places it far behind Vice-Versa (1,525,634) but just ahead of Buzz Lightyear (947,124) at the end of its second week of operation.

Has the man in the hat still made a successful comeback? Not really if we compare to the figures generated at the same stage by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal. The fourth opus which had suffered from critical assassins in 2008 had come out with 1,674,041 tickets sold. He thus offered himself the best “first week” of the saga in front of the 1,629,779 entries of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Today, Dial of Destiny is quite obviously the franchise’s weakest start. It follows the trend observed in the United States, where for its first weekend of operation, it “generated only” 60 million dollars in revenue. It remains to be seen whether word of mouth will allow it to compete with the 4 to 6 million tickets sold in France for previous films.

On the third step of the podium, we find Spiderman, which recorded a small increase in attendance of 5%. Across The Spider-Verse has been viewed by 1,603,883 viewers to date. A very nice operation for Sony, which had not done as well with Spider-Man: New Generation (790,778 admissions at the end of operation) at the start of 2019.

Master Poutifard’s Revenge is the second novelty to enter this top 10 with 180,735 entries. This second collaboration between Christian Clavier and Pierre-François Martin-Laval cannot compete with the excellent start of the Profs (1,037,269) just 10 years ago.

Relegated to 5th position, The Flash continues to plummet with a 12% drop in attendance, while the other two blockbusters that are Transformers: Rise of the Beasts And The little Mermaidboth boosted by the Fête du Cinéma, are slowly approaching 1 and 1.6 million tickets purchased.

Note also the return of life for real of Dany Boon in this ranking, the latter barely managing to cross the bar of 900,000 aficionados. As well as the entry of two other new features: Towards a bright future by Nanni Moretti (91,786 admissions) and the animated film Ruby the Teen Kraken which got off to a start far below what DreamWorks has gotten us used to (88,243 admissions).
