A magnitude 6 earthquake struck off the southern part of Sumatra in western Indonesia on Tuesday (August 23rd), the United States Seismological Institute (USGS) announced. The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 2:30 p.m. GMT (4:30 p.m. Paris time), is located at a shallow depth and was about 64 kilometers from the southern part of Sumatra, assured the Indonesian Agency of Meteorology and geophysics (BKMG).
Residents of these first two provinces have fled their homes, according to local media and witnesses, but no casualties or damage have yet been reported by the authorities. The USGS estimates that there is little risk of damage ashore on the island of Sumatra. In addition, no tsunami warning was issued. For its part, the Indonesian Agency recommended that the population “pay attention to possible aftershocks”.
