Do the financial inequalities between men and women start at an early age? While according to Eurostat data, women in France in 2020 perceived a salary 15.8% lower than that of menyoung girls are not spared these differences in treatment when it comes to pocket money.

A survey (1) shows that between the ages of 10 and 18, boys are entitled to an average of 87 euros per month, compared to 79.50 euros for teenage girls. A difference of 9.5% which still represents 7.50 euros per month, i.e. 90 euros per year.

According to Pixpay, the origin of this survey, the gap widens even more strongly among 16-18 year olds to reach 204 euros per year. How to explain this difference? According to Pixpay, while girls ask slightly more (1.20 euros on average) than boys, they rarely ask for pocket money.

Mothers give pocket money

But things could change on the initiative of the mothers. Because if fathers are more generous when it comes to giving (+5.40 euros on average), pocket money is distributed by mothers in 72% of cases.

Last lesson of the survey conducted by the payment solution for teenagers Pixpay, the inequalities of pocket money between boys and girls also depend on the geographical situation. Thus, it is in Bourgogne-Franche-Comt that the difference is greatest, with on average 22.80 euros additional pocket money each month for teenagers. Conversely, Normandy is getting closer to equality, with a difference of 80 cents per month.
