  • The annual inflation rate is now 1.4 percent after 1.0 percent in March, as the Federal Statistical Office announced.
  • Among other things, prices for package holidays abroad and for air transport were higher than in the previous month.

Swiss consumer goods were on average 1.4 percent more expensive than in the same month last year. While domestic goods cost 2.0 percent more, imported goods were on average 0.4 percent cheaper than in April 2023. The significant increase in April comes as a relative surprise.

Economists surveyed by AWP had only estimated annual inflation at values between 1.0 and 1.2 percent. However, overall inflation had fallen significantly in the last three months, which was not expected.

In December, annual inflation was still at 1.7 percent and then fell to 1.0 percent in March. Inflation in Switzerland peaked at 3.5 percent in the summer of 2022. In June 2023 it fell below the 2 percent mark for the first time since January 2022.

Prices for the hotel industry have fallen

The so-called national consumer price index (CPI), on the basis of which annual inflation is calculated, rose by 0.3 percent to 107.4 points in the reporting month. According to the BFS, this increase is due to various factors, including higher prices for package holidays abroad and for air transport. Prices for furniture and furnishing accessories as well as gasoline have also risen. However, prices for hotels and para-hotels have fallen, as have those for gas.
