In a letter that Europe 1 has obtained, the Minister of the Interior and Overseas Gérald Darmanin asks mayors from the National Rally to host administrative detention centers in their town.

Gérald Darmanin appeals to the mayors of the National Rally. In a letter that Europe 1 has obtained, the Minister of the Interior and Overseas asks elected officials from the RN to host administrative detention centers in their municipality, in order to develop reception capacities in framework of the government’s migration policy, and to increase the effectiveness of the deportation of illegal immigrants.

In this letter, Gérald Darmanin explains that he has asked the prefects “to identify with elected officials the sites likely to accommodate this equipment. My services have not received to date any proposal from municipalities led by the Rassemblement national, I wanted to point out to you personally the importance of this construction program for the effectiveness of our migration policy”, supports the Minister of the Interior.

The objective of 3,000 places by 2027

The National Gathering is however favorable to the construction of new centers, which receive foreigners subject to a decision of expulsion. But according to this letter written by the Minister of the Interior, no mayor belonging to the RN has proposed a site dedicated to the construction of such equipment.

To support his request, Gérald Darmanin recalls that Parliament adopted “a law for programming and orientation of the Ministry of the Interior which sets the objective of 3,000 detention places by 2027”, against 1,857 today. According to him, the State needs eight new centers with 140 places each to fulfill these objectives.
