In an instruction that Europe 1 has obtained, the Minister of the Interior asks to “mobilize all the means necessary for the follow-up of individuals and groups of individuals targeted as having been at the origin of violent actions during riots” in order to guarantee security during the Rugby World Cup and the Paris-2024 Olympic Games.

A month after the urban riots which affected more than 500 municipalities all over France, causing extensive damage to public and private buildings, Gérald Darmanin received executives from the Ministry of the Interior in recent days. He gave them “clear and strong instructions” according to the minister’s entourage. The objective: to maintain order over time, particularly in view of the major sporting events that France is to host.

Maintain order over time

In particular the Rugby World Cup (September 8-October 28) and the Paris Olympic Games next summer. To do this, Gérald Darmanin asked the security forces to be on the alert and to intensify the monitoring, both of individuals known for acts of violence, and of groups involved in the riots.

Gérald Darmanin thus asks the intelligence services to “strengthen their system of anticipation of this type of event from now on”. In this same letter, the tenant of Place Beauvau indicates that “work is underway to understand the causes of these events with hindsight”.
