Innovations from Electrolux – Blick

The yogurt has expired, the fruit has shriveled up, and the cheese is slowly turning moldy: this happens in most households. The result: edibles end up in the trash. In Switzerland, private households sin four times more often than the catering industry, as a survey by “Too Good To Go” shows. The food rescuers have determined that 28 percent of food waste goes to private households. In comparison, the catering industry causes “only” seven percent.

According to the company, an individual’s annual food waste is about as heavy as 900 chocolate bars. Extrapolated to the entire Swiss population, this corresponds to the weight of around a million cows.

All food thrown away pollutes the environment. Because CO is only generated during its production2Emissions. There are additional ones for transport. In addition, packaging material is wasted – and indirectly also the water that is needed to produce the food. So much more is thrown away than “just” the yoghurt, the fruit or the cheese.

Particularly harmful

Overall, however, some foods cause more waste of resources than others if they are thrown away instead of eaten. The Institute for Ecological System Design at ETH Zurich determined the differences using a point system in which the environmental impact per kilogram of food waste (without packaging) is determined.

According to the scientists, the category with the most points and thus the largest “footprint” includes beef, butter, coffee and cocoa beans. Close behind are cheese, eggs, pork, poultry, fish and seafood, and edibles that are imported by air. For example pineapples or mangoes.

Doing something about the waste of these “big feet” (and all other edibles) is possible at any time – and not always time-consuming. «We can all make a contribution. And our clever technologies help to extend the shelf life of food without any loss of quality, ”says René Schaffner, who works at Electrolux operates as a specialist in refrigeration equipment.

3 times longer shelf life – less food waste

With the right choice of refrigerator, you can achieve some improvements. “Temperature stability, the right humidity and a sealed environment are key,” says René Schaffner. Electrolux refrigerators have exactly these properties. This extends the shelf life of food and reduces food waste.

These innovations help

One of those features that keep food fresher longer is the UltraFresh + vegetable drawer. Inside, the humidity is automatically checked again and again. An antioxidant filter ensures high humidity and also releases antioxidants that maintain the nutritional value, consistency and fresh appearance of fruits and vegetables. Since the drawer is sealed, the conditions remain stable. Unpleasant condensation water is also eliminated thanks to the ongoing humidity control.

NaturaFresh also has a positive effectTM 0 ° C zone off. The term refers to a refrigerator area with drawers that can be set to a constant 0 ° C. The humidity in each drawer can be adjusted to the needs of the food in question. Because the drawers are also sealed, the climate remains stable here too.

If you store lettuce, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and other sensitive edibles in these drawers, you can massively extend the shelf life of the edibles and thus help reduce food waste. Cherries and apricots, for example, keep in an Electrolux refrigerator with NaturaFreshTM 0 ° C technology more than 3 times longer than in a conventional refrigerator.

Also the Cooling 360 ° technology does its part to make the edibles more durable. Several slots in the rear wall of the refrigerator ensure that the cold air can circulate everywhere in the refrigerator and really reaches every corner. Since the wall is made of stainless steel instead of plastic, the cooling effect is additionally enhanced. In this way, the temperature can also be quickly equalized if heat has penetrated when the door is opened.

The other helpful features of Electrolux belongs to the TwinTech technology, in which the air in the refrigerator circulates separately from that in the freezer compartment. This ensures dry air in the freezer compartment and optimal humidity in the refrigerator.
This means that the food does not dry out as much.

ColdSense technology, in turn, measures the temperature in the refrigerator with the help of sensors. This guarantees a stable climate. In addition, it enables food to be cooled 40 percent faster, which also delays its deterioration.

Electrolux supports Madame Frigo

Since January 2020, Electrolux has been promoting Madame Frigo – a young non-profit association that fights against food waste – with fridges made available free of charge. The concept: if you have surplus food, you deposit it in a public refrigerator. Anyone who needs groceries can help themselves there free of charge. Madame Frigo’s refrigerators can be found wherever a voluntary operator can be found.

Even if you don’t have a refrigerator with smart technology at home, you can do a lot to reduce food waste. It is recommended, for example, not only to look at the expiration date of food, but to determine whether something has gone bad by means of smell, appearance and possibly a tiny sample. Because many edibles usually last much longer than stated.

Plan ahead and use leftovers

It is also useful to plan menus and purchases in advance and to create a shopping list that you can stick to. Notice that you have still bought too much and cannot use everything in time: Don’t let the food go to waste, but pass it on. Ask friends, family or work colleagues if they would like to benefit from this. Or use a public refrigerator from Madame Frigo. The refrigerators provided by Electrolux can be found at 85 locations in Switzerland. They work according to the motto “bring what you want – get what you need – anytime”.

And have you ever cooked too much? Leftovers are actually a blessing, especially in the home office. In one Steamer with regeneration function they can be warmed up quickly – ideal when time is tight at lunchtime or in the evening. When heated with steam, the nutrients are retained, the food does not dry out and therefore taste like freshly cooked. Do you create one Steamer or CombiSteamer so it’s worth keeping an eye on this feature.
