According to a report in “Bild”, left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht has decided to found a new party. Confidants of the former parliamentary group leaders confirmed to the newspaper that the decision had been made. However, this will not happen before the upcoming state elections in Hesse and Bavaria. Wagenknecht himself told “Bild”: “The decision will be made by the end of the year.”
There has been speculation for months about Wagenknecht’s plans to found a new party to compete with the Left. The politician, who is popular in polls, is controversial in her current party, among other things because of her positions on the issues of migration and climate protection. In Wagenknecht’s view, leading leftists have no understanding of the views of less wealthy people.
“From a privileged position you have a different approach to the topic of heat pumps, organic shops or electromobility. The second electric car is attractive if you have enough money, and the heat pump is also great for residents of a well-insulated house,” said Wagenknecht in the “Tagesspiegel”. “. “But if people in this milieu look down on people who can’t afford all of this and buy their schnitzel at Aldi, that has nothing to do with a left-wing perspective.”
When asked about her plans for her own party, Wagenknecht said: “Many people no longer feel represented by any party and are voting for the AfD out of desperation. I think it would be good if these people had a reputable address again.” However, founding a party would be “an incredible effort.” A single person cannot decide on this, because no single person can build a party. With regard to her “Get Up” project, which she started in 2018, she said that it was not well prepared at the time and that it collapsed after a short time despite a great response.
