Inside Star Citizen: Second Life


In this episode of Inside Star Citizen, the developers at Cloud Imperium Games give us some details on two new features planned for Patch 3.17.2: Manned Shipwrecks and the Siege of Orison Dynamic Event.

Inhabited shipwrecks

The Montreal studio is in charge of producing content to populate the Star Citizen universe. In this context, Quebec developers have started by implementing new shipwrecks, such as those of Caterpillar that can already be explored in the Verse, and now those of Reclaimer.

These last crash sites have the distinction of also being camps. Indeed, the technology necessary to place non-player characters on the ground of planets is now available, which allows to have population, allies or opponents around the wrecks.

The developers will therefore be able to do more than a ship placed on the ground, they will be able to bring the site to life, offer local missions, and link it to its environment.

The integration of wrecks into the landscape is also an axis of effort. Thus, we can guess the force and angle of the impact of the ship on the ground by observing the furrow it will have dug in the earth, and the trees that it will have uprooted or broken. We can also estimate how much time has elapsed since the accident by observing the vegetation that will have pushed back or invaded the ship, by the size of the camp around and in the ship, or by the progress of the recycling of the latter.

“Siege of Orison” Dynamic Events

So far, Dynamic Events have been more focused on space combat (although Xenothreat has an FPS phase in Starfarer Wrecks). The developers therefore wanted to offer one that gives pride of place to dismounted combat.

The “Siege of Orison” takes place in the floating city of the same name, on Crusader. While the place is usually peaceful and relaxing, a gang has launched an assault on various platforms and it is necessary to help the local security forces to regain control.

Some information :

  • The mission is designed for a group of players.
  • We can deal with a dozen non-player characters per platform.
  • It is a PVE mission that does not include a PVP element.
  • The developers didn’t want to provide players with too much information via markers. It will be necessary to analyze and understand the situation.
  • The event takes place on the outskirts of the city for a question of performance.
