Funny that these five travel destinations almost never make it onto our holiday wish list. They are so fascinating – and not yet overcrowded.

The world is huge, but holidaymakers seem to like to crowd together in the same places: on Mallorca and Sylt, in Greece, Spain, New York and Paris … Of course, these islands, countries and metropolises are beautiful, but they are also full. Very full, too full. Here are five great travel destinations where you don’t have to share the beauty with the crowds just yet.

5 (still) underestimated travel destinations that everyone wants to go to soon

1. Burgundy (France)

With its magnificent buildings, the glamor and the turquoise blue sea, the Côte d’Azur is amazing. And in the summer months also incredibly crowded. Sleepier and still absolutely picturesque is Burgundy in eastern France. With pretty old villages, where the baguette wagon still comes in the morning, charming hilly landscapes and of course sensational wine and crémant, which you can taste on every corner. In the capital Dijon there is so much more than the famous mustard with Gothic and Art Deco and in the medieval wine town of Beaune there is so much more than wine: for example the magnificent medieval hospices. The place of pilgrimage Vézelay is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France.

2. Koh Rong (Cambodia)

Underrated Destinations: Koh Rong

One of the largest islands in Cambodia, Koh Rong, offers fantastically beautiful, long, white sandy beaches and has not yet been developed for tourism. Also means: There are mostly simple bungalows and electricity and WiFi are not a matter of course. Ideal for a real break by the sea, far away from everything.

3. Guadeloupe (France)

Underrated Travel Destinations: Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is a French overseas department in the Caribbean. The two largest islands of the archipelago are only separated by a narrow strait. On the hilly island of Grande-Terre there are long sandy beaches and sugar cane fields, on Basse-Terre is the Parc National de la Guadeloupe with waterfalls and volcanoes.

4. Basel (Switzerland)

Did you know that Basel has the highest concentration of museums in Switzerland with almost 40 buildings? The Fondation Beyeler, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum der Kulturen and the Museum Jean Tinguely are among the most important art museums in Europe. And with “Art Basel”, the world’s largest fair for contemporary art, is also located in the city on the Rhine. In addition, the oldest university town in Switzerland offers one of the best-preserved historical town centers in Europe.

5. Reunion Island (France)

Underrated Destinations: La Reunion

A piece of France in the Indian Ocean: That is the island of La Réunion off the east coast of Africa. A fairly ideal world with incredibly impressive natural spectacles – active volcanoes, jungle, waterfalls hundreds of meters high and whales. Plus great B&Bs with style. At the same time, you avoid the crowds in the region’s tourist magnets: Mauritius, Zanzibar and Seychelles.
