Instagram rose to the top of the most downloaded applications in the world in the fourth quarter of 2021. The platform thus stole first place from Chinese TikTok, its main competitor.

The Meta group can rub its hands: according to the latest data from the analysis firm SensorTower, an observer of the mobile application market, three of its platforms are in the top 5 of the most downloaded applications in the world. Better still, we learn that Instagram rose to first place in the rankings in the fourth quarter of 2021. According to SensorTower, this move to the top was made possible by Instagram’s very good performance over the last three months of the year.
The application has indeed benefited from a 10% increase in its downloads compared to Q3 2021. We also discover that it is now approaching the threshold of 180 million downloads in total. As SensorTower points out, Instagram is the first application from the Meta group to rise to first place in the rankings after WhatsApp in the fourth quarter of 2019.
TikTok takes second place…
By going first, Instagram dethrones its main competitor: TikTok, owned by the Chinese group ByteDance, which remains just behind in total number of downloads of its application (just over 175 million). SensorTower points out that this is only the second time in two years that TikTok does not come first in this quarterly ranking. On Q2 2020, generalized confinement obliges, it was the Zoom application which had stolen its place. It is now relegated to 12th position, with just under 60 million downloads.

Based on downloads made on iPhone, iPad and from Google Play, SensorTower data also tells us that a total of 36.1 billion downloads (all applications combined) were made in Q4 2021 – all for a increase estimated at 2.7% in one year. Finally, the analyst firm points out that financial applications are those that have experienced the strongest growth, with + 39% downloads between October 1 and December 31, 2021. The popularity of NFTs in recent months is not unrelated to this success .*
