Instant transfer, mobile payment… The top 3 payment methods whose use is exploding

When it comes to means of payment too, methods are changing. There are those who collapse (the check) and those who fail. Here are the 3 payment methods whose use has increased the most between the first half of 2022 and the first half of 2023, according to the Banque de France

1 – Instant transfer (+137.5%)

Gradually, instant transfer is making its place. Of course, it still only represents 1% of all payments (excluding cash) and 6% of all transfers placed. But it is still growing strongly: +137.5% in number of operations (162 million) and +94.5% in amount (77 billion euros).

Figures are expected to grow further in 2024. This year should remove the last obstacle the generalization of instant transfer: its cost (around one euro, currently, excluding Paylib). By the end of the year, banks will, in fact, have to go free.

The adoption of instant transfer will be all the easier as fraud using this payment method decreases: 42 euros embezzled for 100,000 euros countrycompared to 52 euros a year earlier.

2 – Card payment by mobile (+103.4%)

Some had promised that they would never be caught there. However, mobile payment continues to grow, particularly among younger people. THE number of operations more than doubled (+103.4%) from 2022 to 2023. The country amounts also (+113.7%).

This progression is accompanied by a sharp drop in fraud, from 80 24 euros embezzled for 100,000 euros country. The result of the progress made in the process of enrolling the card in the mobile wallet, which now requires strong authentication.

A sign of the times, BoursoBank, leader in online banking, now offers to replace the physical plastic card with a simple virtual card, usable on mobile and the internet, for a (small) reduction in fees.

3 – Online card payment (+37.6%)

We are not talking here about an emerging means of payment. It has been a long time, in fact, since the French took the habit of using their bank card to pay for their purchases on the internet. The e-commerce phenomenon, however, continues to grow, and with it the volume paid using a bank card (+37.6%).

This type of payment also remains the one that generates the most fraud: 153 euros embezzled for 100,000 euros country. This figure, however, is still falling, thanks in particular to progress made in security (strong authentication, single-use virtual card, etc.).
