Instant Vintage: these political personalities who passed through Matignon under the Fifth Republic

While Jean Castex said goodbye to Matignon, Télé Star decided to bring out from his archives the photos of many political figures who served as Prime Minister before him.

Appointed Prime Minister to replace Edouard Philippe on July 3, 2020 by Emmanuel Macron, John Castex recently bid farewell to Matignon. Indeed, the latter was not retained in this position by the newly re-elected President of the Republic. Since the establishment of the Fifth Republic in France, no less than 23 political figures have held the office of Prime Minister within Matignon. In this list, we can notably cite two former Presidents of the Republic. First of all, Georges Pompidou, who was General de Gaulle’s Prime Minister between 1962 and 1968.

The only President of the Republic to have died in full office within the Élysée under the Fifth Republic, Georges Pompidou was also the 2nd Prime Minister. He had succeeded Michel Debré, who was the first to be appointed to this post in 1959. For his part, Jacques Chirac is the second personality to have exercised the functions of Prime Minister and President of the Republic. Before being elected to the Élysée against Lionel Jospin in 1995, Jacques Chirac was appointed to Matignon by Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1974, then by François Mitterand in 1986. Each time, he left his post as Prime Minister after two years.

Prime Minister: Jacques Chirac forced to appoint Lionel Jospin to Matignon in 1997

President of the Republic from 1995 to 2007, Jacques Chirac will have appointed 4 different Prime Ministers during his two mandates within the Élysée. First of all Alain Juppewho was a resident of Matignon from 1995 to 1997. Then, President Chirac was forced to appoint Lionel Jospin, who remained in office until his crushing defeat in the 2002 presidential election. During his second term, Jacques Chirac appointed Jean-Pierre Raffarin to succeed Lionel Jospinthen Dominique de Villepin in 2005. For his part, Nicolas Sarkozy remained faithful to François Fillon, given that the two men were respectively President of the Republic and Prime Minister between 2007 and 2012. On the other hand, Francois Hollande appointed Jean-Marc Ayrault, Manuel Valls, and finally Bernard Cazeneuve to Matignon during his tenure at the Élysée.
