Instant Vintage: when Isabelle Adjani performed on the stage of the Comédie Française in 1974


While actress Isabelle Adjani was present on the famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet on Friday May 27, 2022, Télé Star decided to bring out photos of the actress on the stage of the Comédie Française in 1974 from its archives.

A true living icon of French cinema, Isabelle Adjani has an amazing career, whether on stage or on screen. Born on June 27, 1955 in Paris, the actress took her first steps in the cinema when she was only 14 years old. She got a leading role in a children’s film called The Little Bougnat, which was shot during the school holidays. Barely 2 years later, she starred in the feature film titled Faustine and the beautiful summer, where she notably gave the reply to Muriel Catala, Francis HusterJacques Spiesser, Jacques Weber, and even Isabelle Huppert, who made his first short appearance there.

Simultaneously exercising her talents as an actress in the theatre, Isabelle Adjani has achieved the feat of joining the legendary troupe of the Comédie Française from the age of 17, without even going through the compulsory National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. During her 3 years as a resident in this huge institution, Isabelle Adjani played in the following plays: The Bourgeois Gentleman by Moliere, directed by Jean-Louis Barrault, The Miser by Molière, directed by Jean-Paul Roussillon, Women’s school by Moliere, directed by Jean-Paul Roussillon, Royal Port by Henry de Montherlant, directed by Jean Meyer, Undine by Jean Giraudouxdirected by Raymond Rouleau, and finally The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca, directed by Robert Hossein.

Isabelle Adjani: crowned 5 times by the César for best actress

After leaving the Comédie Française, Isabelle Adjani has mainly focused on her film career. She has thus played in many cult films such as: The slapby Claude Pinoteau, The Story of Adele H.by Francois Truffaut, Killer Summerby Jean Becker, Subwayby Luc Besson, Camille Claudelby Bruno Nuyttenor even Queen Margot, by Patrice Chereau. A paying career choice given that Isabelle Adjani was rewarded on multiple occasions. She still holds to this day the record of victories for the César for best actress., given that she won the precious statuette 5 times. It was crowned for the first time in 1982 for Possession, a second time barely two years later for Killer Summera third time in 1989 for Camille Claudela 4th time in 1995 for Queen Margot, and finally a 5th and last time in 2010 for skirt day.
