Fujifilm continues to ride the retro and instant photo trend with the new Instax Mini 99. Film camera compatible with the brand’s Mini films, it abandons the colorful codes of the Mini 12 to take up the dress old school of the Mini Evo, but all in black – to emphasize its serious side?

Far from offering cutting-edge optics or 100% manual adjustments, the Instax Mini 99 nevertheless offers more creative latitude than traditional cameras: the big novelty is the appearance of a rendering wheel, which undoubtedly controls a wheel colored which passes behind the optics. The available modes are N (Normal), FG (Faded Green = washed green), WT (Warm Tone = warm tone), LB (Light Blue = light blue), SM (Soft Magenta = soft magenta), SP (sepia), LL (Light Leak). There are also six shooting modes: auto mode, indoor mode, sport mode, double exposure mode, long exposure mode and self-timer (10 s).

The case also has an exposure dial with two levels of over/under exposure. From experience, Instax cameras tend to overexpose, so be careful with the exposure in case of (integrated) flash. Added to this is a double trigger which makes it easier to switch between horizontal/vertical grip and take self-portraits – however, we note the absence of a mirror on the front, which will force you to frame while looking at your reflection in the ‘optical. On the focusing side, we are entitled to a Zone Focus with three sections: 0.3-0.6 m, 0.6-3 m and 3 m-∞.

For power, the device relies on an NP-70S rechargeable battery (and its BC-70C charger, also supplied). A battery model recycled from the brand’s old compacts: we already found it in the FinePix F40fd that we tested in… 2007! In the box, we find a wrist strap as well as a tripod mount grip for fans of long exposures.

Due to this much more high-end finish than other Mini cameras and this horde of improvements, the price is logically higher than usual for film cameras: €199. Far from being a jump, this price allows Fujifilm to offer a range ranging from a Mini 12 at €79 to this more expert model, which joins the Mini Evo with digital technology.

The Instax Mini 99 will be available from April 4 for €199.
