Intel Arc graphics cards are power hungry, even when idle, but there’s a solution

Intel has released a guide to reduce the abnormal energy appetite of graphics cards Bow A750 and A770even at rest.

To do this, it will be necessary to take a look at the BIOS of the motherboard, provided that the solutions recommended by Intel are available.

The greedy Intel Arc

Despite relatively modest specs compared to many models from AMD and NVIDIA, the Intel Arc A750 and A770 have been repeatedly reported to have more energy eyes than belly.

In any case, they would consume much more than necessary compared to the competition at rest, up to 38 W on average. A problem that Intel is aware of, but which apparently cannot be solved via a simple driver update.

The origin of this overconsumption would come from the Active-State Power Management (ASPM), a mechanism for managing energy specific to PCI-Express devices. The manufacturer has split a dedicated article on its site, cited in source below. It details the different steps to follow to prevent the latest graphics cards from consuming too much energy.

How to reduce the consumption of the Intel Arc A750 and A770… if it is possible

With a view to more reasonable energy consumption at rest, Intel invites Arc card owners to go to the BIOS and make the following changes:

  • Allow OS-controlled ASPM by changing the “Native ASPM” setting to “Enabled”;
  • Enable Native ASPM Port for PCI-Express by selecting the L1 Substates option.

However, depending on the age of the motherboard or the BIOS version, these options may not even be present, or may still be enabled by default. In the first case, Intel has no advice other than to consult the manufacturer of the motherboard in question. Finding the settings themselves may also require help from the manufacturer, as some BIOSes can be quite labyrinthine.

In addition to the BIOS, Intel indicates that it will be necessary to make some changes on Windows, in the event that this operating system is used:

  • Go to the Start menu > System > Power and sleep;
  • Click on Additional power settings;
  • Select the preferred program and click Change;
  • Click Change advanced power settings;
  • Find PCI-Express;
  • Click the + icon next to PCI-Express for more options;
  • Click the + icon next to Power Management;
  • Select Maximum Energy Savings as the preferred setting from the drop-down menu;
  • Click Apply, then OK.

Once all these steps have been completed (if possible), the consumption of the new Intel Arcs at idle should be reduced. Some, however, reported no change to the Intel Arc A770, even after applying Intel’s solution.

The manufacturer indicates that it is working on modifications aimed at eliminating this problem on future architectures. When in doubt, it would be more prudent to be patient before acquiring one of Intel’s latest graphics cards, while waiting for the situation to stabilize.
