With each new chip, Apple promises never-before-matched performance, but it seems that Intel has won the bet for video decoding!

In November 2020, Apple announced with great fanfare its new M1 chip and the switch of all its future devices to in-house processors. Since then, the brand has already released four other processors: M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra and the chip that notably equips the latest MacBook Air: the M2.

After overturning the table, Apple gets caught up

It is clear that Apple hit hard with its first in-house chip. Performance and battery life were unmatched with previous iterations running on Intel frameworks. This shift in gear appealed to users, but it also pushed other manufacturers to push their limits.

Since this upheaval, Intel has already caught up well. In this comparison posted on Twitter by David Huang, the brand’s latest graphics card, the Arc A380, is said to be better than the M1 Max chip on video decoding. It was however the strong point highlighted during the Keynote presentation of the new iteration of the M1. In the Twitter exchange, the user quips by recalling that Apple “ keeps an advantage, and not least, he sells machines! “.

Indeed, the question of the power of Intel’s graphics card does not seem to be debatable, but when we compare more broadly a PC equipped with it to a MacBook M1 Max, software optimization remains on Apple’s side. . With FinalCut Pro and ProRes in particular, the brand maintains its preserve, but will that be enough if the competition outperforms it in other areas?
