At CES 2022, Intel yesterday presented its next generation of high-performance mobile processors for gaming laptops. Based on the Alder Lake hybrid architecture, the spearhead of this new range would be able to beat Apple’s M1 Max chip by developing more performance per watt… at least according to Intel.

The flagship of the new Alder Lake-H line, the Core i9-12900HK is the fastest mobile processor on the market. At least this is what Intel said yesterday during the presentation of its new chips for laptops. The brand ensures in particular that its i9-12900HK outclasses by a large advance the powerful M1 Max chip, launched by Apple on the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 at the end of last year.
Remember that this is not the first time that the Core i9-12900HK has been announced as the winner against the M1 Max chip. A preliminary benchmark of the new Intel flagship was already going in this direction last October, well before its official launch. Unfortunately for Apple, the thing seems to be confirmed.
An ad that should be checked in real use
As a reminder, the Core i9-12900HK is based on the Alder Lake hybrid architecture. It thus brings together 6 high performance cores and 8 cores designed for energy saving and everyday activities. The high-performance cores of the chip are able to keep up to the 5.00 GHz boost, and the consumption of this new processor is announced at 115 W … which is significantly more than the Apple M1 Max processor, which is probably close to 90 W The latter for its part includes 8 high performance cores and 2 low consumption cores.
With four more cores and a significantly higher TDP, the Core i9-12900HK looks on paper on paper to beat the Apple M1 Max. And that’s what Intel confirms in a chart shared yesterday. Strangely, Intel ensures that its Core i9-12900HK outperforms its competitor by developing more performance per watt … even if the Apple M1 Max operates at a much lower TDP, underlines MacRumors.
“Specrate 2017 is a good benchmark that we use to assess the performance of our multithreaded processors, and our data indicates that the Core i9-12900HK is faster in performance per watt than the M1 Max processor in this test.“, Commented a spokesperson for Intel contacted by the specialized site.
Obviously, these results will deserve to be verified in real use, but it is clear that the level of performance reached by Intel is to be applauded. It remains to be seen whether Apple really has anything to worry about. If its chips are beaten, they will likely retain better energy efficiency. A real strong point to avoid overheating but also to maximize performance on battery.
It should also be remembered that Apple will launch its first Apple M2 chips within a few months, which should make it possible to improve performance on the next generations of MacBook, in the face of competition which is definitely coming back in force.
