Intel launches its 12th generation of “Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U” processors for laptops

A new wave of mobile processors signed Intel is formalized to complete the offer on the portable segment ” thin & light “.

Last November, Intel launched the first Alder Lake processors, its 12th generation. Thanks to the CES in Las Vegas, the American founder has completed its offer with the Alder Lake-S and Alder Lake-H ranges.

If the latter finally made it possible to taste Alder Lake on a laptop, it was then only a question of the largest mobile CPUs. Today’s announcement comes precisely to adjust the shot and concern the lightest laptops.

20 new low-power CPUs

Simultaneously, two new ranges are announced and distributed by Intel, the Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U. Two new ranges which are not surprising insofar as the American has already done so.

With Alder Lake-P, Intel is lowering what it now calls the PBP or processor base power of its chips: we are talking about 28 Watts when the Alder Lake-H reached 45 Watts. The Alder Lake-U go even further with a PBP of 9 to 15 Watts depending on the model.

In either case, consumption obviously increases significantly at full load, but we remain at much lower levels than on previous ranges. Alder Lake-P CPUs top out at 64 Watts and Alder Lake-U at 55 Watts.

Hybrid and DDR5 CPUs

Reduced consumption does not mean processors at a discount, however, and Intel insists on continuity, the logic of its offer. The ‘P’ and ‘U’ ranges thus keep the most important new features introduced on the other Alder Lake processors.

As you can see from the tables that illustrate our article, the cohabitation of high-performance cores (Golden Cove) / efficient cores (Gracemont) is still appropriate even if the number of cores is logically revised downwards.

On the memory side, things are more complicated. ‘P’ processors are compatible with DDR4-3200, DDR5-4800, LPDDR4x-4267 and LPDDR5-5200. The same goes for the ‘U’ processors in 15 Watt PBP, but the ‘U’ range in 9 Watt PBP must be satisfied with LPDDR4x and LPDDR5.

Widespread adoption and good performance?

Of course, Intel had preceded its announcement with intense discussions with major laptop manufacturers. In fact, the American is already able to announce that the first machines equipped with these CPUs will arrive in March 2022.

Better, before the end of the year, we should be able to count on more than 250 different designs coming from all that the planet counts of major manufacturers. Intel is not stingy and quotes for example Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, NEC, Samsung…

Finally, an official announcement would be nothing without the inevitable performance slides. We will take all this with caution while waiting for the first tests, but Intel mentions CPUs in clear progress compared to current generations and the competition.

On the strict ground of performance, the Alder Lake-P do not seem to fear many people © Intel

The provisions above highlight in particular 3D rendering around 50% faster on a Core i7-1280P compared to a Core i7-1195G7. It is also a question of overflowing the M1 Pro from Apple on Photoshop, but without mentioning of course the respective consumption of each chip.

On performance alone, these Alder Lake ‘P’ and ‘U’ seem to have all their appeal. It now remains for Intel to prove to us that it can really compete with the best in performance per Watt.
