Intel Meteor Lake: towards an iGPU equipped for ray tracing?

The 13e generation of Intel processors is not yet out that we are already talking about the 14e. Finally, especially for its graphic part.

In a few weeks, Intel will market its Raptor Lake processors, but there is no question of revolutionizing the CPU world while Meteor Lake, scheduled for the end of 2023, should be more innovative.

An organization by “tiles”, the emphasis on AI…

First of all, several weeks ago, Intel confirmed that a Meteor Lake CPU would feature a distinctly different design, based on “tiles”… much like AMD can do, by the way.

The idea is effectively to see the chip as a kind of construction game to which we can associate different elements, different units to emphasize the high-performance cores, the efficient cores or, as Intel clarified a short time ago , artificial intelligence.

Intel has communicated about what it calls the “ integrated AI acceleration “, which others have seen under the name of ” versatile processing unit or VPU. This VPU is to be compared to NVIDIA’s Tensor Cores: units specialized in the processing of specific tasks.

…and an iGPU with ray tracing acceleration

Today, we are not talking about VPU, but the multiple specializations of Meteor Lake remain on the menu with details on the graphics part integrated by Intel while the latter seeks to compete with AMD.

For his 14e generation of processors, Intel will integrate the Xe-LPG architecture, a derivative of Xe-HPG which will ignore some options of the latter. It could nevertheless have ray tracing acceleration functions, according to recent patches of the Intel Graphics Compiler.

Of course, the addition of such functions is not new for integrated graphics solutions, and AMD is already doing it with its Ryzen 6000 whose graphics part is based on RDNA 2. Still, this would show Intel’s interest for the iGPU and its desire to move forward in this area.
