If things improve on the front of graphics cardsall is not rosy in the world of semiconductors.

For nearly two years, we have been hearing about shortages in shambles or supply chains turned upside down. Several observers believed that things would get better at the end of 2022 and more clearly during 2023. But Intel is no longer really of this opinion.

Tensions on the lithographic material

During an interview with CNBC’s TechCheck program, it was the Intel boss who commented on the situation, and he is hardly optimistic. Pat Gelsinger sees the shortage continuing for several more months, due to the lack of manufacturing tools.

This is part of the reason why we estimate that the shortage of semiconductors will continue until 2024, contrary to our previous estimates of 2023. Simply, the shortages are now affecting equipment, and factories will have a hard time to advance their production lines. »

By ” equipment Pat Gelsinger refers to lithography machines used in industry to produce semiconductors. Problem, the largest company in the sector, ASML, is not able to keep up with demand. In 2021, it increased its production by 18% compared to 2020, but it would have needed a 50% increase.

We are thus far from the mark, and whereas the order book of ASML is saturated, one understands better the new estimate of the owner of Intel. On our scale, let’s just hope that the launches of new generations of GPUs and CPUs are less chaotic than the previous ones.
