Intel says its bitcoin (BTC) mining chip is energy efficient

Intel guarantees that the dedicated bitcoin (BTC) mining chip is power efficient

Intel, the world’s second-largest semiconductor manufacturer, is currently developing a dedicated bitcoin (BTC) mining chip. In a press release published on February 11, 2022, the American company briefly mentioned the advantages of its technology. Intel refers to the chip as a “blockchain accelerator”.

“We declare our intention to contribute to the development of blockchain technologies, with a roadmap of energy-efficient accelerators. Intel will engage and promote an open and secure blockchain ecosystem and help advance this technology in a responsible and sustainable manner”announces Raja M. Koduri, senior vice president of the architecture, graphics and software division of Intel.

According to the computer engineer, Intel’s mining solution will offer “1000x better performance per watt than mainstream GPUs for SHA-256 based mining”the encryption algorithm of the Bitcoin blockchain.

Tailor-made for mine Bitcoin without consuming too much energythe component is described as a “extra low voltage circuit”. If Intel’s assertions hold true, the chip could help contain the energy consumption of proof-of-work, the Bitcoin blockchain’s block validation system.

Intel has pledged to release more information about its technology by the end of February. As part of the international conference on semiconductor circuits (ISSCC), the American giant will present the advantages and technical characteristics of its solution at greater length. Dedicated to industry news, this online event will begin on February 20 and end on February 24, 2022. Intel’s conference is scheduled for February 23, as shown in the program on the ISSCC website.

? To go further – Bitcoin: mining, energy consumption and ecology

Jack Dorsey’s Block firm has already pre-ordered Intel’s mining chip

According to Intel, three well-known companies have already pre-ordered its Bitcoin mining chip: Argo Blockchaina British mining firm, Bitcoin GRIID Infrastructurea mining company with 3 farms in the United States, and block. Formerly called Square, the latter launched into cryptocurrency mining shortly after its name change in early January. During the announcement, the start-up of Jack Dorseyformer CEO and founder of Twitter, is committed to reducing the energy footprint of Bitcoin mining.

The semiconductor producer has no shortage of ambitions in the cryptocurrency sector. According to Intel’s chief architect, the firm plans to produce its chips on a large scale focusing on “realizing the full potential of blockchain by developing the most energy-efficient computing technologies”. The first version of the mining chip will be released by the end of the year.

In parallel, Intel is also developing graphics cards intended exclusively for the mining of cryptocurrencies. At the end of 2021, the American giant committed to offering Arc graphics processors for miners. This initiative aims to stem the shortage of graphics cards that penalizes video game enthusiasts. Based on the Alchemist architecture, these processors will be launched during the first quarter of 2022.

Finally, we notice thatIntel evokes the advent of the metaverse in his press release. The company claims that “we are ushering in the era of the metaverse and web 3.0”. In the past, Intel had been more skeptical of the rise of virtual worlds.

In a post published in December, Raja M. Koduri had indeed implied that the metaverse as described by groups like Meta was even closer to theory than practice. According to him, we should achieve multiply by 1000 the computing and processing power of today’s computers to ensure the functioning of the metaverse.
