Intel’s new NUC 13 Extreme was presented at TwitchCon. First impression: it’s bigger!

Last weekend, those who attended TwitchCon had the opportunity to check out Intel’s new Raptor Canyon. With its significantly larger size, does Intel plan to release lines of NUCs in more pronounced form factors?

The NUC 13 Extreme: NUC or PC?

We learned that Intel’s next NUC 13 Extreme (code name: Raptor Canyon) was launching in July 2022, and some things leaked in August as well. But we now know more after Intel’s presentation at TwitchCon Day 3.

The new Raptor Canyon is undeniably larger than its predecessor: 13.9 liters, compared to 8 for NUC 12 Extreme. This new version moves away from the idea that we can have of a NUC (Next Unit of Computing).

In truth, Intel’s new device is getting closer and closer to a mini-PC rather than a traditional NUC, known for being practical, powerful while being compact. This gives the impression that Intel is entering the mainstream PC market.

What do we know about Intel’s NUC 13 Extreme?

The advantage of a larger size is that Intel’s new NUC is more powerful, with a Raptor Lake processor in the first place (version still unknown). The NUC 13 Extreme will also be able to accommodate a graphics card three slots wide, certainly longer than for its predecessor which could already take a card of about thirty centimeters.

In addition, the “sandwich” format is no longer part of this new device, because Intel has planned a new layout to allow better cooling. The graphics card is located directly under the motherboard, and access to memory is direct.

The NUC 13 is expected to launch in Q4 2022, which means Raptor Lake will definitely ship before then. Intel will reveal more details about the new Raptor Canyon’s specs, release dates, and pricing in the coming weeks.
