Intel splits its graphics chip unit to better compete with Nvidia and AMD

Intel adjusts its strategy to nibble shares in the semiconductor market. The American founder has decided to make a split in its branch dedicated to graphics chips to ramp up on advanced technologies, reports Reuters. The goal of such a separation is to better distribute Intel’s efforts in a flourishing sector dominated by Nvidia. Pat Gelsinger’s group also has a hard time dealing with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Thus, the team in charge of GPUs for the consumer market will now be under the leadership of the CCG branch (Client Computing Group), which manufactures electronic chips for computers intended for individuals, while the division which concentrates on more advanced GPUs, with high performance computing (HPC), will join the DCAI unit (Datacenter and AI group) responsible for research on artificial intelligence and data processing for B2B uses.

To lead this overhaul of the division dedicated to graphics chips, Raja Koduri will be in charge. Passed by AMD and Apple, the latter, who joined Intel in 2017, is responsible for overseeing the long-term strategy of the American founder in the design of graphics chips.
