While USB drives have reigned supreme over file transfer for years, Intel aims to relegate them to the past with Thunderbolt Share. This software solution, intended exclusively for Windows PCs for the moment, promises to evolve collaboration between computers by harnessing the power of the Thunderbolt port.
Semiconductor manufacturer Intel has just lifted the veil on a brand new software solution aimed at simplifying gateways between computers. Called Thunderbolt Share, this promises to offer users the possibility of interacting more easily with two PCs. securely sharing files, screens, keyboard, mouse and storage at the speed of Thunderbolt technology “. In other words, you will now only need to connect two PCs using a simple cable to benefit from faster and more intuitive PC-to-PC experiences than before!
Thunderbolt Share, the solution that will replace USB keys in the coming years?
Thunderbolt Share presents itself as the key to unprecedented interaction between two PCs. Thanks to a simple Thunderbolt cable, this solution will allow you to share several functionalities: screen, keyboard, mouse, storage and USB peripherals. For example, you will no longer need to juggle between devices, a simple drag and drop will be enough to transfer files at Thunderbolt speed (40 Gbit/s or more). Folder synchronization will also be possible, ensuring permanent updating between machines connected to your local network.
Intel is banking on a complete ecosystem to power Thunderbolt Share. An application will be licensed to manufacturers of laptops, desktops and accessories, who can integrate it into their new products. If the presence of a Thunderbolt 4 or 5 port is required for optimal use, compatibility with USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3 remains uncertain according to Intel, which prefers to focus on its own standard and does not provide any technical support for these alternatives. So you have been warned.
An ecosystem that is still too closed?
This ecosystem strategy, however, raises a question: the need to acquire a new Thunderbolt 4 or 5 compatible device to take advantage of Thunderbolt Share inevitably restricts its scope of application. Jason Ziller, head of the Thunderbolt division at Intel, justifies this approach by the strong interest of manufacturers and the American giant’s desire to guarantee an impeccable user experience in close collaboration with its partners (Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Razer, Kensington, Belkin …).
Furthermore, and as we mentioned a little earlier, Thunderbolt Share will be limited exclusively to Windows machines. “ We are exploring opportunities on other operating systems, but at this time connecting with a Mac is not considered “, says Intel.
You will have understood, you will therefore first have to ensure that your devices are Thunderbolt Share compatible before you can hope to take advantage of it at home. Also note that this solution will be offered on certain PCs from the second quarter of 2024 and that eligible computers and accessories will display a specific logo to avoid confusion.
