For several generations, Intel has been using a new power management method on its processors. The PL1 and PL2 limits were thus set up with Comet Lake and have been maintained since.

To put it simply, the PL1 limit corresponds to the needs of the processor to be able to maintain its base frequency. For its part, PL2 is there to ensure the possibility of reaching the boost frequencies.

On the Alder Lake generation Core i9-12900K, the PL1 came in at 125 Watts and the PL2 at 241 Watts. On the Core i9-13900K – Raptor Lake – Intel seems to have to keep the same values, even if some rumors mention a PL2 at 253 Watts. There is, however, more important.

Up to 350 Watts in “extreme” mode

Indeed, beyond this PL2 limit, Intel would have the idea of ​​setting up a so-called “extreme” mode. Limited to only Core i9 and some Intel 700 motherboards, the thing would allow a maximum of 350 Watts.

Some have commented that going over the PL2 limit on Alder Lake CPUs doesn’t offer clear performance gains, but the CPUs weren’t designed for it. In the case of the Core i9-13900K, we are talking about a performance increase of around 15%.

The question is obviously to see if the game is worth the candle knowing that the power difference is much higher than this 15%. Not to mention that such a processor will need an absolutely remarkable cooling solution to keep it cool.
