- Russia unsurprisingly used its veto Friday, September 30 to prevent the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution condemning its annexations Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Donetsk. Apart from the Russian veto, the resolution collected 10 votes in favor and four countries abstained: China, India, Brazil and Gabon. The text will now be submitted to the General Assembly where all member states are represented.
- Vladimir Putin had endorsed Friday afternoon the annexation of these four territories. “People have made their choice, a choice that leaves no doubt as to their will”, declared the Russian president before embarking on a long indictment against the West. A sign of some disorganization, the Kremlin spokesman announced that he had to ” clarify “ whether Russia annexed all of the Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia, or only the parts it actually occupied.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Friday in his daily address the “significant results” of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the east of the country, when the strategic town of Lyman, controlled by the Russians, is partially surrounded by troops from kyiv. For his part, a senior pro-Russian separatist official, Denis Pushilin, described the situation as ” hard “. “The guys are holding out”he told local media quoted by the Russian agencies.
