Former Federal Councillor Alain Berset was elected as the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe on Tuesday evening.
At a media conference, Berset will speak about his election and his goals in this office. Follow the stream live.
What is interesting is that Switzerland’s membership in the Council of Europe has recently been called into question in certain circles after the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of the climate senior citizens and condemned Switzerland.
The newly elected Secretary General first of all thanks the Swiss President Viola Amherd, who has always supported his candidacy. He also thanks the other countries of the Council of Europe who voted for him.
His aim is to promote peace in Europe following the conference on the Bürgenstock. His impression is that democracies are stagnating, in Europe and in other countries. Freedom of expression is very important to Berset.
