An era is ending and it is with sadness that we learn of the end of Internet Explorer after many years of loyal service (despite the mockery).
Despite the teasing against Internet Explorer, we can’t help but have a little thought for the browser that has just gotten swe last breath on the day of June 15, 2022. With his death, it’s a bit like the end of an entire era, the departure of an internet monument. The browser was launched on August 16, 1995 and some may have known a time when it was the only existing browser.
The end of an era with Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer 1.0 is created on the basis of Spyglass Mosaicc browser. At this seemingly distant time, IE is provided as an option in the first plus pack! of Windows 95. In 2015, it is a turning point since Microsoft announces the progressive replacement of Internet Explorer by Microsoft Edge, we already knew that it was the beginning of the end. From then on, the browser was used less and less around the world.
A browser that smells like the 90s
Always a symbol of an era, it is amusing to note that in 1997, the government of US President Bill Clinton sued Microsoft for abuse of a dominant position, in particular because of Internet Explorer. The legal proceedings had been concluded in 2021 with an amicable agreement. Microsoft pledged not to force computer manufacturers to refuse to adopt software other than its own.
In the end, Explorer only represented 2% of the internet browser market, compared to 77% for the juggernaut Google Chrome, 8% for Safari (Apple) and 5% for Edge.
