Internet rip-offs – Naughty scam with fake post website

Lockdown is currently high season for Internet fraudsters. LKA chief inspector Gerald Sakoparnig assumes a large number of attempts at fraud – for example through the use of fake shops and phishing attacks. In the past few weeks, more and more advertisements in connection with a false Post website have been registered: “The crooks are extremely creative and agile.”

Due to the massively restricted shopping opportunities in stationary retail, buyers and sellers increasingly switch to the Internet during lockdown times. “Please do not switch off your common sense, take enough time for every online business and remain suspicious, because fraudsters operate everywhere,” advises Gerald Sakoparnig, head of the fraud department at the State Criminal Police Office. There are no postal couriers, for example increased advertisements for fake mail pages. On online marketplaces (Willhaben, Ebay, etc.) crooks initially pretended to be interested in buying and claimed that, for “security reasons”, they did not collect the goods but had them delivered by “postal courier”. “Our post office doesn’t offer such a service,” warns the chief inspector. Pre-payment for the transport Subsequently, links to false websites (postservice-delivery.info or post-service.online) were sent and the sellers were asked to provide their personal data for to announce an advance payment of the courier costs. “A basic rule is that as a seller you don’t pay anything. If that is different, please keep your hands off immediately ”, warns Sakoparnig. Lost foreverThe fraudsters promised the sellers a reimbursement of the expenses together with the item price after receiving the goods. The financial transfer was processed via push TAN SMS. Sakoparnig: “In most cases, the money is unfortunately lost forever – and ends up somewhere abroad!”
