INTERVIEW. Catherine Davydzenka (Here it all begins): “The more Hortense sinks into her malaise, the more her bulimia attacks will intensify”

For the past few days, Hortense has been at the heart of the plot of Here it all begins because of the leak of her video diary. These videos in which she criticizes her comrades hide a deeper malaise: her bulimia. His interpreter, Catherine Davydzenka engages in Télé Star.

Télé Star: Hortense is more than ever on edge… What’s happening to her?

Catherine Davydzenka: Hortense has a diary of modern times. She does not write but records her thoughts and emotions by filming herself. It’s an outlet. Except this journal is going to leak. Tom is going to leak it to everyone out of revenge. She doesn’t expect it at all. And that will break a part of his life.

In her videos, she attacks her comrades…

This is the whole subtlety of the thing. These are not accusations but reflections, observations on things that she does not necessarily understand on a human level and whose use is supposed to be strictly personal. These are excesses of emotions and anger due to a deeper malaise, which is his illness.

How will she reveal her bulimia?

It is a vast program that I cannot disclose. But it is a disease from which she has suffered since adolescence. It had calmed down but it has come back in the last year and she is obviously finding it more and more difficult to manage it since if this disease is not taken seriously and in time, one develops physical problems. , mood swings, etc. The more she sinks into her unhappiness, the more the crises will come together and intensify. So it will show. Hortense is more hollow, tired and loses weight. She will deteriorate a little bit over time, both physically and morally.

Who can she count on to get through this ordeal?

It will be very complicated for Hortense to admit and assume this problem. Psychologically, this disease makes us feel very bad, we are ashamed of ourselves and of the disease, we feel disgusting, dirty. She will therefore not confide in herself. It will be a long journey. Claire [la cheffe Guinot, jouée par Catherine Marchal, ndlr] going to be the first person to suspect it. She will decipher signs that others will not have seen. If she is unaware of bulimia, Celia [incarnée par Rebecca Benhamour, ndlr] going to be a great support when leaking the videos. She is one of the only ones not to turn her back on him and try to understand Hortense.

How Catherine Davydzenka made Hortense’s bulimia visible on screen

This will not be the case of Mehdi, played by Marvin Pellegrino? [l’interview a été réalisée avant l’épisode du mercredi 20 avril, ndlr]

Everything will depend on his reaction after the broadcast of the video concerning him. Hortense experiences a deep malaise, especially in relation to her couple. Because Mehdi is very ambitious. He is in the conquest of pastry and wants to leave his mark. Which means that sometimes – even very often – he is very centered on himself. So he didn’t even notice that Hortense made herself vomit after meals. She feels contradictory feelings: she would have liked him to realize it but she would never have confessed her bulimia to him. Will he understand that she is sick? Will he continue to close his eyes? That’s the whole problem.

Personally, how did you react when you learned that you were going to play this deeper score?

I was really very happy and honored to have the confidence of the screenwriters. The topic of TCAs [troubles du comportement alimentaire, ndlr] is very important. It was my duty to represent him as well as possible on screen.

You have also lost weight for this plot.

Absolutely, six or seven kilos. I did it on my own initiative, being supervised. It was one of the things I cared about the most. It was very important to me not to make bulimia pretty or sexy. I didn’t want it to be a well-haired, well-made-up and thin chick at that point in the ark but for the illness to show. May she be emaciated and dug.

Besides this physical transformation, how did you prepare for this ark?

I did a lot of research and unfortunately, around me, it’s a subject that touches me. Two or three close people – and that’s already too many – suffered from bulimia until hospitalization. It’s a very complex disease with several aspects, including the one I chose to make visible on the screen: the fact of eating a lot, making oneself vomit and therefore losing weight due to low reserves. I prepared myself with personal memories, examples, research, I documented myself and I spoke to a doctor about it.
