Brigitte: Why did you decide to work with weDo / Professional? What convinced you

Janina Uhse: The products themselves. It’s just great when you use products that prove their effectiveness with great results. WeDo / packaging is 100 percent recyclable – one reason for me why I would buy it when shopping. It looks good, it looks nice in my bathroom and the products are still sustainable, so you are still doing something good for the environment.I especially like the solid shampoo. It’s super compact and makes your hair really fluffy. I have rather fine hair and I can already see a big difference from before.

How did you get into Clean Beauty? Was there a turning point in cosmetics or skincare that made you rethink?

No, I’m really not a missionary either. But if everyone deals with their possibilities, everyone will probably also find their lever for change. That’s how I did it and changed it accordingly. And that’s how I finally came across Clean Beauty.

Has your hair changed after switching to clean beauty?

Yes, especially my hair texture. The hair first has to get used to this change. Because many ingredients that are contained in conventional care products are not used in the clean beauty sector, such as silicones. But with the right products, this changeover is really very quick. And since then I’ve had just as good, if not better, results than before.

Sustainability in everyday life: this is how it works at Janina

How do you integrate sustainability into your everyday life?

I’ve made up my mind to ride a lot less by car and more by bike. I also generally no longer use bags from the supermarket, but always bring my own. But I also tried to change something in terms of nutrition. I am a passionate eater and hobby cook. And I have noticed that I now really eat 80 percent, if not 90 percent vegetarian. For me, meat and fish have become a luxury.

I think you have to be kind to yourself when it comes to sustainability. Because you are already doing your best. You take small steps, you get used to these changes and then you can improve again.

You are very successful with your food account @janinaandfood. How has shopping and production changed in terms of sustainability?

When we started the account back then, we still ordered catering to ensure that everyone gets something to eat. The result: We had a mountain of food that was left over because we also cooked for the food account at the same time. I got really sick of how much food had to be thrown away – the greatest sin for me. But that has changed in the meantime, as it was really a great learning curve for me. Now what is cooked for production that day is eaten and everyone is happy with that.

“I have my favorite pieces that I just wear over and over again.”

When shopping for clothes, do you make sure that it was produced fairly?

For me, clothing has always been about quality rather than quantity. I prefer to pick out a few good parts that will last for several years and shop less for them. I think it’s all about the longevity of fashion. However, more educational work is absolutely necessary here. Because consumers often understand: not in the manufacturer’s advertising promises. You have to start there.

How could you get people excited to shop more sustainable products such as clean beauty or fair fashion?

I think people often associate sustainability with less impact and that has to get out of their heads. But it also requires training. I wasn’t taught what sustainability means at school. Therefore, you have to educate yourself and inquire about the current status and then try to act.
