Fragrances shape our memories and we associate emotional moments with them. In an exclusive interview, influencer Milena Karl reveals which fragrances are most suitable for this.
It’s Christmas time and the streets are full of all kinds of smells – from fir trees and firewood to lard biscuits and sweet mulled wine. But even in your own four walls there is a smell of everything that we associate with festive days. To never forget this Christmas, all you need is the perfect scent. Whether candle, room spray or perfume: Milena Karl has the answer to the question of which fragrances will remain unforgettable.
Favorite fragrances – then and now
Brigitte: Do you remember your first scent, your first perfume?
Milena Karl: Yes, I always stole that from my mom until I wished for one for Christmas and it was always Miss Dior because I thought the bottle was so cute.
Which perfume is currently your go-to fragrance?
It is currently the “Costa Rica” fragrance from Les Destinations. It just reminds me of the freshly roasted coffee from my favorite café in Hamburg. Woody and warm, but at the same time pleasantly fresh.

How does a fragrance have to be for you so that it speaks to you?
Unique! I always think it’s cool when I don’t know scents and it’s a new fragrance experience for me. I love traveling and I like to be reminded of different destinations through scents.
Fragrances often remind us of certain moments when we once wore the perfume. What fragrance do you like to wear when you’re nostalgic, and what time are you reminded of?
It’s not a perfume, but when I get engaged I will always think of the flowery-sweet scent of the Maldives. The most beautiful scent so far that I have been able to experience while traveling.
For a Christmassy home
According to Instagram, you are a big fan of the romantic Christmas season and the magnificent decoration of your own four walls that goes with it. This also includes one or the other scented candle. Do you have a favorite?
Yes, I love Christmas and especially bake cookies! I currently love the Christmas edition “Biscuit” from Diptyque – the whole apartment smells like a Christmas bakery with the candle.

For which fragrance – whether perfume, room fragrance or scented candle – did you get the most compliments?
Oh, that was another nice niche fragrance from “Van Cleef Arpels – Santal Blanc”. I got a lot of compliments from women and men, wherever they told me what the fragrance reminded them of. I love that!
Unisex fragrances are a big trend. How does it look at home? Does your fiancé have a perfume that you like to steal?
I am a big fan of unisex fragrances because I love to wear woody and deep scent nuances. For my fiancé, however, I prefer even more powerful and masculine fragrances such as cedar wood, tobacco and leather notes.
