Interview WoW Classic, what future for the Season of Discovery?

Discover the summary of our interview conducted with Nora Valletta (Lead Software Engineer) and
Josh Greenfield (Senior Game Producer), concerning the Season of Discovery and its future on WoW Classic. The two responsible for the development of this alternative version of
World of Warcraftanswered our questions about many upcoming elements about the game as well as its future within the WoW universe.

Our video summarizing the main topics of the Interview.

Note that if you are new to WoW Classic, you can find all our advice for the leveling phase in the Season of Discovery.

New features coming to the Season of Discovery

Among the many topics covered during our interview, we were able to discuss the question of double specialization of talents (see our article dedicated to double spec), Raids with 40 players (see our article dedicated to future Raids on SoD) , the arrival of new specializations and archetypes or even the presence of a PTR in future Phases of the game.

To summarize the answers on the new features to come:

  • The double specialization of talents will arrive later (probably at level 60 given the clues given by the developers)
  • 40-player Raids are confirmed but Legacy Raids (MC, BWL, Naxx etc.) will most certainly be modified
  • No PTR for the Season of Discovery, or only on very specific elements
  • The class sets will certainly be present but in a slightly different format from the WoW Classic originals
  • No confirmation as to the arrival of new specializations and archetypes, however the developers have ideas. Maybe a surprise to come?

These answers suggest that in addition to fairly important content in Phase 4 (epic mount, double spec), we should also see other Phases after the fourth, in particular to deploy End-game content.

What future for the Season of Discovery? Towards a transposition to other extensions?

The second part of our interview discussed a slightly more distant future for SoD, notably evoking the idea of an end for this concept and a transposition of the model towards another, more recent extension.

To summarize the answers on the future of SoD:

  • Nora Valletta spoke about an end for SoD, evoking the idea that this model was based on a gaming experience much more than a system that had to live over the long term
  • Your Season of Discovery characters will not be able to transfer to normal WoW Classic servers. Josh Greenfield was adamant about this, justifying this choice by the power of items and spells on SoD
  • The developers remained very cautious about transposing the model to a new expansion
  • The success of the Season of Discovery has probably validated an innovative concept, so it is possible that other attempts of the genre will be considered in the future on World of Warcraft content.

Although required to exercise some caution regarding their statements, both developers nevertheless appeared to be very happy with the experience on Season of Discovery. While it is still far too early in the SoD cycle to consider a similar model on a more recent expansion, it is likely that its success has not gone unnoticed among those responsible for the group.
