This Monday in Clermont-Ferrand, (Puy-de-Dôme) a nursery school was forced to close its doors following an invasion of fleas. A situation that has lasted for more than two weeks.

Since the start of the school year, the Jean-de-La-Fontaine nursery school in Clermont-Ferrand has been plagued by an invasion of fleas. Despite several attempts, it is impossible to rid the school of the fleas that parasitize it. According to the childhood-youth assistant at Clermont-Ferrand town hall, Cécile Audet “As soon as it was brought to our attention, we reacted extremely quickly. We have set up a pest control in the premises of the nursery school and elementary school. Things did not necessarily improve, so we carried out several sessions with a specialized company. We dealt with the premises, the elementary and kindergarten playground, since it is in the latter that the problem is located and that there are the most fleas. The management alerted us to the fact that there were fleas at the entrance to the school ”.

An unprecedented situation

“This morning we were told to go home with our children and that the school was closed until further notice”, tells a mother of a family for The mountain. After these events, the teaching team of the nursery school spoke about this never encountered situation: “Three schools are infested with fleas in France, including ours. Every evening, we have to inspect our things so as not to bring back fleas home. It gets complicated ”

The majority of teachers and students were bitten in the legs, an infection that must be treated as soon as possible to get everything back to normal. A mother confides in an article for France 3 Régions “Fortunately, my son was not affected. There are 2 of his classmates who had pimples. The problem is that we are advised to buy products, steam appliances… We don’t mind, but at 150 or 200 euros the appliance, most parents cannot afford it ”

The stray cats at the origin of this invasion

According to the town hall, the culprits of this invasion would have been identified: it is about fifteen stray cats who were near the establishment. As of Monday, the school will remain permanently closed pending better conditions for teachers and students. According to Cécile Audet, solutions have been considered to fight against this spread of stray cats and fleas: “We put up posters to avoid trapping domestic cats and we encourage people not to feed them”

A complicated situation for this school, which despite everything found the means to accommodate the 167 children, to other premises. The date for the reopening of the school has not yet been set, according to the town hall of Clermont-Ferrand, it will depend on the effectiveness of the treatments.
