(dpa) Italian police have arrested several high-ranking politicians in the southern region of Basilicata on suspicion of embezzlement and abuse of office. The authorities investigated, for example, against a regional councilor of the conservative Forza Italia, who ran for the parliamentary elections on September 25, and against the mayor of the municipality of Lagonegro, as the public prosecutor in Potenza – the capital of Basilicata – announced on Friday. Through surveillance and testimony, police found that the council had links to organized crime.
