Certain professional activities can be carried out with an AVE
With the travel authorization (AVE Canada), you can carry out different professional activities. For example, you may visit a customer, partner or supplier, attend trade shows, conferences or business meetings, or travel to Canada for the purchase or sale of products or services. You can then enter the country to attend a shareholders’ meeting by simply applying for a Canada eTA.
If you want to go to Canada to work, it is also possible to do so with an eTA and without a specific work permit if you belong to a certain professional group. If you are a journalist, member of a film crew, athlete (or coach), artist, speaker (during an event of up to five days), academic (evaluation or review of research projects) or trainer company (for training in the Canadian branch of your employer), you do not necessarily need a work permit, but can exercise your professional activity if you hold an eTA Canada.
When do you need a work permit?
In a number of cases, you will need to apply for a visa. For example, if your job involves physical labor of any kind, you will need a work permit. The only limited temporary exception is for student work. However, even if you work for a company or a corporate organization, if you are employed by a Canadian employer or if you are going to start a new business in Canada, you cannot do so without first applying for a work permit.
If one of the aforementioned works concerns you, the purpose of your trip does not meet the conditions of the AVE. You must therefore apply for a visa to work and stay in Canada. Depending on your individual situation, plans and requirements, different residence and work visas for Canada are applicable, which you should apply for in time. Keep in mind that visa processing can take several weeks and in some cases up to two months.
Have a detailed invitation letter written
If you plan to attend a shareholder meeting, conference or wish to visit a company in which you want to invest, you may be asked to present a letter of invitation upon arrival in Canada . This will be checked in case you are singled out for control by immigration officials. In this case, it is useful to have on hand a letter of invitation explaining your plans and work intentions. This applies to both work activities with a Canada eTA and work activities with a work visa. This letter should be written by the (potential) Canadian business partner you wish to visit. It should contain essential information about the person invited and the person or company sending the invitation.
