Illegal car racing? HSV punishes professionals hard

The cars have been confiscated by the police, the official investigations are ongoing, and now the club is reacting: After a car accident, a professional from Hamburger SV has to pay a large fine. However, he is threatened with much more trouble from elsewhere.

The second division soccer team Hamburger SV has imposed “heavy fines” on its players Jean-Luc Dompé and William Mikelbrencis after a car accident. This was announced by the Hanseatic League. The two Frenchmen also did not take part in team training. “We spoke to Jean-Luc and William and both said unequivocally that we consider their behavior to be absolutely irresponsible and that they expect a corresponding sanction in the form of a sensitive fine,” said club board member Jonas Boldt. “The results of the police investigations are also of great importance when determining the sentence,” it said in a statement.

The car accident happened on Monday evening near the port of Hamburg. According to the club, 27-year-old Dompé was “directly involved”, 18-year-old Mikelbrencis “as a passenger in another vehicle nearby”. Both players had “removed from the scene of the accident before the police arrived”. The investigations are ongoing – also “due to the suspicion of a prohibited motor vehicle race”, as the police confirmed.

Boldt now expects a “significant learning effect for both players”, as he said: “We are very happy that there was no personal injury and nobody was seriously injured. Both should learn from their mistakes as soon as possible and have to take responsibility for them”.

Dompé and Mikelbrencis admitted their wrongdoing before the board on Tuesday afternoon. “We made a terrible mistake because we should have stayed where we were. We can only formally apologize and now have to take responsibility for the consequences,” Dompé and Mikelbrencis said in the statement.

Dompé also apologized. “I didn’t live up to my responsibility in this situation. I’m very sorry,” said the attacker: “I apologize to my team and also to HSV and its fans, who certainly have a different behavior from a colleague and player from the expect a professional team.”
