Ionity launches new plans for recharging your electric car: are they profitable?

The Ionity charging network is once again updating its price list. From now on, there are two subscription plans, suitable for small and heavy riders.

Most of the time, you recharge your 100% electric car at home, ideally using a reinforced socket or even a terminal. But when you go on a trip, you have to trust the road infrastructure. There are several networks, and Ionity is one of the most serious. We were able to test it on board a Volvo EX30, with maximum satisfaction, both in terms of prices and user experience.

Ionity has announced new subscription prices, displayed on the website. During our Volvo EX30 trip, there was only one subscription at €5.99 per month. It made it possible to make a saving of 20 cents per kWh recovered (39 cents, instead of 59). Today, this subscription still exists, but Ionity has added a second one at €11.99 per month: it reduces the kWh to 33 cents, a saving of almost 50% compared to the full price.

Are these subscriptions profitable? And, if so, from how many kilometers traveled?

Ionity subscriptions are profitable, but you have to choose according to your profile

Passport Motion plan at €5.99 per month

The Passport Motion subscription is the same as the one that already existed (and which still cost €17.99 per month in 2023). It allows you to pay 39 cents per kWh on terminals installed in France (prices vary depending on the country). Without a subscription, you have to pay 59 cents per kWh.

From how many kWh recharged is the subscription profitable? Answer in this table.

Without subscriptionWith Passport Motion*
10 kWh€5.9€9.89
20 kWh€11.8€13.79
30 kWh€17.7€17.69
40 kWh€23.6€21.59
*price obtained by multiplying the number of kWh by 0.39, to which we add 5.99

As we can see, the Ionity Passport Motion subscription becomes profitable from the 30th kWh recharged. Depending on the consumption of your 100% electric car (which depends on the conditions and your driving style), this equates to a distance of between 120 and 200 kilometers. In short, Passport Motion is profitable from the first session.

Passport Power plan at €11.99 per month

The Passport Power option is based on a higher monthly cost and allows you to save a few cents on the kWh. It is intended for heavy riders.

From how many kWh recharged is the subscription profitable? Answer in this table.

Without subscriptionWith Passport Power*
10 kWh€5.9€15.29
20 kWh€11.8€18.59
30 kWh€17.7€21.89
40 kWh€23.6€25.19
50 kWh€29.50€28.49
60 kWh€35.4€31.79
*price obtained by multiplying the number of kWh by 0.33, to which we add 11.99

As we can see, the Ionity Passport Power subscription becomes profitable when you exceed 50 kWh recharged – compared to the base rate. Depending on the consumption of your 100% electric car (which depends on the conditions and your driving style), this equates to a distance of between 200 and 330 kilometers.

Passport Motion versus Passport Power: which subscription to choose?

When does Passport Power become interesting compared to Passport Motion?

PassportMotionPassport Power
50 kWh€25.49€28.49
60 kWh€29.39€31.79
70 kWh€33.29€35.09
80 kWh€37.19€38.39
90 kWh€41.09€41.69
100 kWh€44.99€44.99

As we can see, the Passport Power formula only becomes interesting from the 101st kWh recharged (and not 50 kWh). Or from a motorway distance of between 400 and 660 kilometers depending on consumption. According to Ionity, Passport Power is aimed at those who need to recharge at least twice a month.

Note that the two subscriptions offered by Ionity are without obligation. It is entirely possible to choose a plan before a big trip, then easily cancel immediately. Finally, the first month will be cheaper: €3.99 for Passport Motion and €7.99 for Passport Power.
