Supplemented by information from Mark Gurman, code that Apple leaked in the latest beta of iOS 15.5 tells us about some new features expected, via iOS 16 / iPadOS 16, on iPhone and iPad.

Discovered by 9to5Mac, these snippets of code point in particular to a significant improvement in the notification system through iOS 16, which would also benefit from an enriched Concentration mode. The latter would have new settings allowing even more customization to provide ever quieter moments during the day.

A few iPhones and iPads shelved

Mentions contained in the iOS 15.5 beta, on the other hand, suggest that certain iPhone models eligible for iOS 15 will not be compatible with iOS 16. Logically, it should be the iPhone 6S, but the iPad Mini 4 (also launched in 2015) could also be affected.

Without saying too much, Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloomberg, reveals anyway that iOS 16 would also set up satellite connectivity, but only on the iPhone 14, expected at the start of the school year. This novelty would send emergency messages and would be intended for the integration of emergency features on the new iPhones, as well as on the Apple Watch. In the past Ming Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman had already predicted the arrival of such a novelty… but on the iPhone 13. It would therefore finally arrive this year, with a little delay.

Towards a new, faster Lightning connector?

We learn in parallel, this time from the leaker LeaksApplePro on iDropnews, that Apple engineers would work on the integration of a new Lightning connector on certain iPhone 14. This would allow transfer speeds equivalent to those of USB 3.0 . We would thus go to 4,800 Mbps (against 480 Mbps currently), which would allow file transfer, one of the weak points of the iPhone, to pass a huge milestone.

However, this novelty could only concern the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max and is intended mainly to speed up the transfer of large files using the Apple ProRes format. If confirmed, this could be great news for creatives using their iPhone to shoot 4K content and want to transfer their footage to a PC via their Lightning connector.
