After iOS 17.0.3, partially correcting the heating problems of the iPhone 15 Pro and providing security fixes, Apple continues at the end of October with iOS 17.1. The opportunity for the Apple firm to make interesting developments to a few features, including AirDrop, StandBy and even Apple Music. We are also entitled to the end of a little French soap opera around exceeding the limits of exposure to waves from the iPhone 12.
What’s new for iPhones with iOS 17.1?
To begin with, iOS 17.1 improves a function exclusive to iOS 17: StandBy. Allowing you to have an intelligent and personalized display when the iPhone is in standby and in landscape mode, this new feature benefits from additional options around its display duration on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro. With the update, it may turn off after 20 seconds or never.
AirDrop then offers a very interesting new feature: the possibility of working even when the two iPhones are no longer close enough. iOS 17.1 will automatically send the transfer over the internet in order to finalize the sending of the file(s).
The new version of iOS 17 then focuses a lot on Apple Music. The American company pays particular attention to its streaming service by:
- Adding a “favorite” icon next to the media player (in the app and on the lock screen when playing) instead of the traditional “Like” hidden in the options. As a reminder, this option allows you to add content to your library and feed the recommendation algorithms;
- Suggesting music at the bottom of each of its playlists;
- Allowing you to exclude an artist from its recommendations.
Apple then explains in the update notes that iOS 17.1 allows you to choose a photo album for the random display of images on the locked screen; or even support for digital keys for Matter locks.
Several fixes and optimizations are also announced by the Apple firm:
- Fixed an issue that could cause the Important Places privacy setting to be reset when transferring or initially pairing an Apple Watch;
- Fixed an issue that could prevent callers’ names from being displayed when another call is in progress;
- Fixed an issue that could prevent personalized and purchased ringtones from being displayed in the “SMS Sound” options;
- Fixed an issue that could affect keyboard responsiveness;
- Crash detection optimizations (all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models);
- Fixed an issue that could cause displayed images to persist.
Finally, iOS 17.1 brings the emission of electromagnetic waves from iPhone 12 into compliance in France. As a reminder, Apple was singled out by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) on the same day as the announcement of the iPhone 15, i.e. on September 13.
