iOS 17.4: the iPhone 12 now has 15W Qi2 wireless charging

With the iOS 17.4 update, Apple has resolved, without fanfare, a compatibility issue for iPhone 12 owners. Apple’s smartphones released in 2020 now benefit from support for the wireless charging standard. -Qi2 wire. Previously, only models from the iPhone 13 onwards benefited from this technology, leaving iPhone 12 users waiting. This discreet update was noticed by users and confirmed by tests carried out by our colleagues at Macworld.

Qi2, successor to the Qi standard, offers doubled wireless charging speed, from 7.5 W to 15 W, while improving energy efficiency thanks to a system of magnets allowing optimal alignment between the smartphone and the charger. This feature is directly inspired by Apple’s MagSafe technology, which served as a model for the development of the Qi2.

The first Qi2-certified chargers are already available on the market, with well-known brands such as Anker, Belkin and others offering 15W wireless charging solutions that provide an affordable alternative to Apple’s MagSafe chargers. Although this update has not been officially announced by Apple, it allows iPhone 12 users to take advantage of recent technology on their older device.
