Apple Maps should offer customizable routes, as well as topographical maps. These new features should arrive with iOS 18, which is scheduled for release in September 2024.
Little by little, Apple Plans continues to make its mark. Released in 2012, the first version of the mapping application offered by Apple was an absolute disaster, with incomplete maps and approximate and even dangerous routes. The failure was so severe that Tim Cook wrote a letter of apology and encouraged his users to switch to Google Maps while his teams repaired the damage. Apple has since invested seriously in recreating its own maps, and the efforts are paying off with more and more active users each month. There is no question for the iPhone manufacturer of relaxing its efforts and each year sees Apple Plans enriched with several new features. 2024 will be no exception.
Customizable routes with Apple Maps
An Internet user named Nicolás Álvarez published on X.com (formerly Twitter) several of his discoveries consisting of code changes made by Apple in Apple Plans.
The first is the appearance of a new file called “ CustomRouteCreation », and linked to iOS 18. Apple Maps could thus offer customizable routes during navigation. The functionality offered by Apple is quite rigid, and only allows you to choose between two or three proposed routes. It is only possible to add one or more destinations to your journey.
This new option should allow users to choose a shorter route, or one crossing a specific tourist area, and no longer just get the quickest route to get to their destination.
Topographic maps inherited from the Apple Watch should appear
Apple Maps with iOS 18 should also be enriched with new topographical maps. The latter already exist on watchOS 10, the Apple Watch operating system, and are also highlighted on the Apple Watch Ultra, the most adventurous version of the connected watches offered by the manufacturer.
The topographical maps show the different reliefs and can be useful to hikers or athletes who do not have an Apple Watch to find their way and determine the best route to follow.
If we hope to see its new features in France during the launch of iOS 18 next school year, we must keep in mind that Apple often favors a localized launch only in the United States, before deploying its new products more widely in the world after a few months.
We should learn more by June 10, when Apple invites developers and the media to WWDC 2024, its conference dedicated to software. iOS 18 should logically be presented in the smallest details, and like every year, Clubic will be there to make you experience the event as if you were there.
